Education in the liberal arts involves liberation from ignorance through the arts of education. The American
Civil War and the issue of slavery, are important to an education in the liberal arts for many reasons, one of
which is that racism was very much behind the enslavement of Africans, and the Constitution of the United
States as ratified in 1789 declared blacks to be three-fifths human. Racism is very much an issue that plagues
the United States to this day.
This forum involves applying your critical thinking skills to two documents.
First Document: The first is the Mississippi Declaration of Secession (UPLOADED), where the State specifies
its reasons for seceding from the Union of the United States of America.
Second Document: Inaugural Address of Abraham Lincoln (UPLOADED), the first president of the United
States who was a member of the Republican Party.
Your writing should consist of three parts:

  1. Critically evaluate the Mississippi Declaration. What facts serve as the basis for the Declaration? Are the
facts true and relevant? What is the State’s argument? What are their conclusions? Finally, what are your
thoughts and feelings about what the State of Mississippi declared?
  2. Critically evaluate President Lincoln’s Address with the same kinds of questions.
  3. What are your personal feelings concerning the two documents? What have you learned? In what ways are
they relevant for life in the United States today? How do they help us to live as better Americans with greater
    love and wisdom?
