Select a book from your written assignment 1 (annotated bibliography) and write a 3-5 page book review. A sample book review is available in the course syllabus packet.

Guidelines for Written Assignment 2: Book Review—Maguire—History 17A

Book reviews are to be between three-and-five pages in length, using standard fonts (Times New Roman) and font size of 11 or 12pt. The finished product should be double-spaced.

Books for the review should come from assignment 1: The annotated bibliography. Some additional criteria include

Book has to be at least 180 pages
Book has to be a serious historical work (no novels, no tabloid style biographies, and no books primarily made up of pictures).
Place the following information at the top of the first page: author, title, and place of publication, publisher, and copyright date, number of pages. For example: Ambrose, Stephen E. Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1996, 474pp.

Your book review should incorporated the following:

An overview of the subject of the book
The author’s thesis (his/her main argument and/or reason for writing the book)
Your critique of the book. (How well does the author support his/her arguments? How does his/her view fit your understanding of the subject? Is the book well researched and well written? What are the book’s strengths and weaknesses?)
Your critique of the book is the most important aspect. Keep in mind that this is a book review, not a book report. I am looking for assurance that you not only read the words, but also really thought about and digested the contents. I want your analysis and assessment of the book.
