Psychotherapy with Individuals

Nursing theory and the counseling theory
The selected nursing theory is Roy’s Adaptation theory while the counselling theory is the counselling theory. Roy’s model considers an individual as a biopsychosocial being who is in constant interaction with a changing environment. This person is considered to be an open and adaptive system that relies on the coping skills to help in dealing with issues or stressors. The environment is considered to be all conditions, situations, and the influences within the surrounding of the patient that influences the behavior of a person. The stressors in this theory are considered to be the stimuli and they use residual stimuli to help in describing stressors who impact on the individual is not clear. The role of Roy’s Model is to help in the promotion of the adaptation of the four modes thus leading to the individual’s health, quality of life, and death dignity (Smith & Parker, 2015).
The structural family theory, on the other hand, is a theory that was by Salvador Minuchin to help in addressing the problems being faced within a family. It applies the psychological framework to help in the process of understanding the dynamics of the family. In this theory, a family is being considered as a small system unit that functions and lives within the larger system which includes the organizations, community, and the culture. This theory considers a family as something that can be changed with time as the family members are growing and continuously interacting. This theory involves the use of the concepts that help in the organization and the process of understanding the family. The concepts include the structure, the sub-systems, boundaries, the power, the coalition, the alignment, and the disengagement (Smith & Parker, 2015).
The structure is considered to be how the family is organized for example their behavioral patterns which can be changed. This theory considers a healthy structure as one with clear boundaries in the system and its subsystem. A subsystem is the smaller units with the system, and it might consist of one or more individuals. The subsystem gives a room for negotiation whereby the members of the family carries out their roles. There is the presence of rules to guide the relationship in the subsystem. The subsystem includes the parental subsystem, the spousal subsystem, the parent-child subsystem, and the sibling subsystem (Wheler, 2014).
Boundaries are considered to the be rules which are used to define the individuals who participate and how their participation is carried out. Boundaries are also considered to be the physical or the psychological factors that are separating people from each other and organizing them. Boundaries reused to control the contact that the subsystem is having with other subsystem and helping in ensuring that there is the existence of a healthy family. The boundaries help in ensuring that there is the existence of certain norms within the families for examples children are expected to behave in some way that does not contradict the believes and the practices of the family (Thompson, 2016).
The reasons for selecting these theories
The selection of Roy’s model is based on the consideration of how it views nurses. Based on this theory, it is the responsibility of the nurse to ensure that patients are assisted through nurturing positive adaptation. Therefore, holistic adaptation is allowing the ideal health, well-being, and high-quality life to be achieved. As a nurse, humans are bio-psychosocial beings and any change to the environment whether it is internal and external leads to the imbalance that must be addressed effectively. Therefore, as a nurse, it is my role to influence the conscious response through the adoption of the activities that are aimed at facilitating the integration of the body and the environment (Thompson, 2016).
The selection of the structural family theory is because it helps in ensuring that there is a clear detailed understanding of the family while helping them overcome the problem being faced. It helps in the identification of the strength as well as the weaknesses of the family when dealing with issues. The structural family theory is aiding the process of identifying the strengths and the weakness to help in the reduction of the weaknesses while at the same time building on the stronger areas to ensure that the family can change from being dysfunction to a productive one. The overall process of understanding the family’s preparation is helping on overcoming the dysfunction in the family. It helps in getting rid of the harmful interaction to facilitate the process of dealing with the dysfunction in a family (Smith & Parker, 2015).
The three goals as well as the three objectives for the practicum experience in this course
The success of this course must be through setting some goals as well as the objectives to be achieved. Therefore, some of the goals for the practicum experience in this course is gaining of the experience, improvement of confidence in the completion of the tasks, and improvement of the confidence of the patient while receiving healthcare services. The objectives, on the other hand, include learning about and assisting the in the process of planning nursing care, re-assessing the practices of the nurses to help in the reflection of the realities, and the development of the written plan of nursing care (Wheeler, 2014).
The practicum timeline
In this week, there were hours to observe and this, therefore, implies that a proper plan has to be made to ensure that the time is used adequately. In the first day, I shadowed doing a bio-psychosocial assessment, I was able to do a biopsychosocial assessment of a patient by myself, there was great support there and then shadowed a group session of cognitive behavioral therapy. Even though I was anxious on the first day, I was able to overcome this problem through relying on the preceptor which assisted in gaining more confidence.
