Write a brief paragraph which explains which topic you chose, what this topic means to you and to
American Studies, and a few ideas as to what you want to say about the topic in your essay and slide show.
Your topic should be narrow and have a purpose. For example, if you chose the Harlem Renaissance you
should write a paragraph which tells me what about the Harlem Renaissance you want to investigate as well as
the importance of the Harlem Renaissance to America and American culture.
After you decide on a topic, research it- go beyond Wikipedia (however, I can show you how you can use
information from Wikipedia as a source). This essay is not meant to be an expository history assignment. Of
course, you do want to explain your topic- the history and the who/what/where/when/why, but you also need to
discuss what your topic means to American Studies. Some questions to consider (these questions are not
exhaustive nor have to all be addressed) when writing your paper are:
How does this event/topic relate to past historical and contemporary movements, events, and realities?
What American values are present in your topic? How does your topic access or relate to these values?
What is the myth of your topic as opposed to the reality, the truth, of your topic?
What critiques or analysis do you have about the information surrounding your topic?
Is your topic correctly or adequately covered by the media? Has there been a public propaganda campaign
about your topic? Why?
What various perspectives exist about your topic? Why were there differing points of view?
