Exploring new collaborative partnerships: NBA Africa

In February 2014, Alan Davies, chief executive of Rio Tinto’s Diamonds & Minerals product group, attended the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) conference on Africa development during the annual All-Star weekend in New Orleans, US. While some of the world’s greatest basketball players competed on court, behind the scenes, global business leaders met to discuss partnerships and the future of African social and economic development.

On the heels of the Africa Mining Indaba conference, Alan attended a number of NBA- sponsored events with 40 business leaders to discuss Rio Tinto’s vision for African development and how collaborative partnerships can deliver economic impact. He discussed Rio Tinto’s 50-year history on the continent and the opportunities he sees in the seven countries in which the company operates.

In Africa, they are working to grow their footprint by engaging more fans, create positive social change, and increase their brand awareness through programmes such as NBA Cares and Basketball without Borders.
