This week, you will study culture and health. Culture is clearly a social construct, as it refers to our group identity, although it is also inter- and
intrapersonal. We each identify with a culture (or cultures) that, to some degree, defines us (intrapersonal) and also impacts—and possibly
determines—our social circles and how we interact with them (interpersonal). Therefore, culture has the most visible impact on the first three
rungs/circles in the Social Ecological Model.
Cultures have belief systems that relate to health. Fatalism, for example, is the belief that what happens to us (disease, death) is predetermined and
out of our control. Fatalism is more common in some cultures than others and, as you can imagine, may determine attitudes toward health conditions
(such as, cancer) and health behaviors (such as, screening for cancer). Different cultural groups might have characteristically different ways of
experiencing and coping with stress.
Religious and spiritual experiences also differ, sometimes widely, from one cultural group to another. A person’s culture(s) is not just one more factor
to consider. It provides a framework within which to understand the whole person. Therefore, you must consider this essential element in all the work
you do in this course and beyond. As you progress through your readings, this week, think of your own culture(s) and subculture(s) and how they
relate to what you think, believe, and do in general, and specifically in relation to your and your family’s health.
