Developing a Sustainability Plan for Your Project

Developing a Sustainability Plan for Your Project

Scenario

Your organization has a mission of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. It has also adopted sustainable project portfolio management. You have just been assigned to evaluate a project to establish operations at a copper mine in Catamarca, Argentina. The mine is located in the Northern desert region of Argentina. The estimated cost of start-up operations is $1.2 billion. The mine was operational up to 10 years ago, when it was abandoned by the previous owner because of serious safety and environmental violations.

Under the previous owner, primarily local labor was employed. Government officials in the area expect these workers to be re-employed when your company begins operations. Your company feels that more specialized skills are needed than can be found locally.

The transportation infrastructure is in disrepair. This was a major obstacle because the majority of the equipment for mining operations must be imported. Negotiating with local leaders, your company agreed to improve the roads in exchange for the permit to operate the mine. The improvements will also include new roadways in and around the closest town and villages.

The greatest concern of local leaders is that the safety and environmental violations of the past not be repeated. You company must prepare a plan that demonstrates specific steps it will take to ensure safe and environmentally responsible operations. The local government must approve the plan before operations commence. As an act of good faith, your company has agreed to clean up an area of waste products that were left behind by the previous owners.

For this Assignment, refer to The GPM P5® Standard for Sustainability in Project Management. Review the P5 Table of Elements on page 12 of The Green Project Management Standard. This should include:

  • A thorough and detailed analysis of how the three elements may impact or may be impacted by the project
  • An assessment of potential issues and how they will be managed
  • An appraisal of the project’s alignment with the company’s mission
  • A go/no go recommendation for the project supported by the results of your analysis
