Write an essay of approximately 1,500 words (which is around 5 pages, double spaced) in which you address one of the following prompts. In every case, devise an argument that you carefully support using examples from the text.
1. Discuss the minor characters in Merchant of Venice and Richard III. You might consider framing your discussion around pairs of similar characters (children or servants for example). What function do these characters serve in the play? How do they contribute thematically to the plays?
2. Write an essay in which you compare religion in Merchant of Venice and in Richard III. How does religion function in each play? Make an argument that connects the two plays and makes a broader point about religion in general for Shakespeare.
You may also write on a topic of your choosing that that engages both Merchant of Venice and Richard III, but you must clear your topic with me well in advance of the due date.
