You will analyze how and evaluate how well Art Spiegelman establishes credibility in his comic, Maus, Part One compared and contrasted with how (and how well)Alison Bechdel establishes credibility in her comic, Fun Home
●In your first body paragraph, explain in your own words what four factors you believe make an author/ artist most “credible” when it comes to telling stories like the kind we’re reading in these comic memoirs. Options may include any of the topics we’ve discussed the past few weeks: art choices (like color or its absence; depicting characters as animals versus humans); sharing intimate details (even ones that a reader may find shocking or shameful); tone (especially towards their fathers); the structure of the story itself (chronological or divided up); any reference to factual or historical details or“evidence,” whether drawn, cited, or shared. You may choose any number of these factors or you may choose your own, or any combination of the above options and your own. The goal in this body paragraph is to create criteria to establish what you think credibility should have in a story like this. Explain and defend those four factors (this is a large, important paragraph). The four factors you establish in this paragraph will form your structure in the body paragraphs to come.
●Then, looking at one of your own factors at a time, compare and contrast how Spiegelman uses that factor with how Bechdel uses that factor. Cite the texts; point to examples in art and in words (see my “Citing Text Effectively” lecture). At the end of this paragraph, argue who uses that factor better than the other, Spiegelman or Bechdel? Provide multiple reasons; be specific.
●Proceed to do the same thing in the next body paragraph, except with your second factor; then a separate body paragraph for your third factor; and then a final body paragraph for your fourth factor. This makes your body paragraphs FIVE total (a criteria paragraph plusfour compare and contrast paragraphs applying your four criteria factors).
●Based on who uses more factors better than the other, form a thesis statement declaring who uses credibility better overall. If it’s a tie (two factors each), then say so in your thesis. Your thesis will look something like:
EX: Based on my criteria for credibility, I believe Spiegelman uses ethos better than Bechdel overall.
Or
EX: I will argue Bechdel establishes credibility in her story better than Spiegelman does in his because she uses x, y, and z more effectively, whereas Spiegelman’s only strength is w.
Or
EX: Based on my four factors for establishing ethos in comics, Spiegelmanuses two factors better and Bechdel uses the other two better, making their works relatively equal in credibility overall.
●Conclude with implications or drawn conclusions about what both stories tell us about the nature and importance of “truth” in a story or history. Make this as relevant, personal, or modern an application as you want.
●Go back and write the introduction. Name the two texts; name the two authors and artists. Briefly summarize each text. Briefly introduce the concept of ethos and what it means and why it matters. Then state your thesis at the end of the introduction.
*** I already have the first body paragraph done and I have attached it to the additional material so you can use it to refer to the 4 factors in order to do the other body paragraph.
