Close reading is an invaluable practice for assessing the dynamic function of language within a story. As such,
this practice engages our interpretative and analytical skills. For this assignment, you’ll choose and analyze a
scene from James Marlon’s Weeper in order to showcase (1) how it fits into the larger narrative and (2) how
concepts such as language, imagery, themes and/or tone function towards this aim. The section you choose
should be short (no more than two pages if possible) and it should be striking to you for some figurative,
thematic, structural or linguistic reason.
Give your close read a title which includes the page number(s) of the excerpt. Underline your title.
Introduce your close read by contextualizing the passage you have chosen. In other words, explain where in
the novel and at what point in the story the passage occurs.
Introduce your paragraphs with topic sentences that indicate the concept you will be exploring in said
paragraph
