As the country has kicked off Black History Month, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, has the nation speaking on a sensitive and uncomfortable conversation regarding race. Recently, Northam’s 1984 medical school yearbook surfaced featuring a man dressed in blackface, which is believed to be him and another person dressed in a Ku Klux Klan uniform. As discussed and shown in class Governor Northam issued a video on last week apologizing and taking ownership of his behavior. However, the following day he held a press conference to share a different story, indicating that the person was not him. However, he expressed that he darkened his skin using shoe polish to portray Michael Jackson at a dance contest, which he claims that he won. Given the history of blackface and Governor Northam originally admitting that it was him and then said later that it wasn’t, should he be impeached or resign? Why or Why not? Defend your answer.
