Research Proposal Assignment
Research Proposals exist for two reasons: One, as a guide for you to examine the overall shape and scope of your project, and two, to elicit funding from sponsors for said project (usually). As I can pay you only in joy and rhetorical knowledge, this proposal focuses more on the former intended outcome and as practice for future proposals in your career. For our purposes, you will generate a brief proposal that will help guide you towards your final research paper. Remember that this is a proposal – i.e. a suggestion for what you would like to write about within the confines of your discourse community. Essentially, you’re going to take something you love and identify an exigence affecting the discourse community around that thing you love.
Tip – Your interests/passions will lead you to a subject – such as “global warming”
Your eventual final paper will investigate a topic related to that subject – such as “the effects of global warming on the breeding methods of the Canadian Goose.” (NOTE: this proposal is simply to start investigating the topic. That investigation will lead to your research question and a more formalized inquiry, but don’t try to get to that point just yet).
“HAY GIIIIRRRRLLLLLLLLLL”
Don’t concern yourself with writing an introduction or a conclusion or with presenting the proposal as a concept that is written in stone. You are proposing an investigation, NOT to find a solution. In other words, your thesis is mostly just “This exigence exists and is worth investigating.”
Paragraph 1: In the first paragraph of your proposal, introduce your passion. What is your topic of interest, and why does it interest you? How did you come to know about this topic? How long have you been involved, and what is your personal stake? (This can be first person and largely informal. Stuff like “I really love geese. I love their long necks and their bad attitudes and how they fly south for the winter. I used to watch them a lot where I grew up, so the sound of them honking reminds me of home.” That sort of thing. You get the idea).
Paragraph 2: Identify and analyze the discourse communities you are a member of that share your passion as a topic of interest. (While biologists may be concerned with geese, you’re likely not a biologist (yet!) but you could count yourself as a member of the “bird watching enthusiasts” discourse community). If none of the groups you are a member of meet the criteria for a discourse community, find one that does and research that instead! You don’t necessarily need to be a member of the one you choose – it just makes things easier if you happen to have insider knowledge.
Next, go through Swales’ six defining characteristics and lay out how your chosen community meets each one. In other words, list 1.) their public common goals, 2.) their tools of communication, 3.) the reasons they often communicate and which tools they use to do so, etc. Refer to the list we made on the Google Doc for this part.
Paragraph 3: Next, identify an exigence that impacts your discourse community. What is a situation (“problem” – but remember, it doesn’t have to be negative!) that could be changed or improved on? How did you come to learn about it? Do you have any personal experiences with this exigence that led you to think it should be addressed? What are the potential benefits of addressing this exigence, and for whom? In other words, what good could potentially come from solving the exigence and who would it benefit to do so?
And that’s it! You don’t need to go any further than this just yet. It’s just to give you an idea of what you might want to talk about and who it concerns.
