One way of expressing Respect was to always handshake our family members like grandparents, aunts, and uncles, no matter how often we saw them. Another form of Respect was how we answered to our elders. This practice impacted me positively; I show Respect to everyone professionally. Titles do not matter. Coworkers see how I present myself around others. Many decisions, I made in my career were reflected with Respect. Again, going to my boss in person and telling them I found another job instead of sending an email. Communication was a form of Respect. Dignity and Respect (2015) mentions whether you are in conversation with coworkers, with friends and acquaintances, or with your family members, practicing honest and robust communication is a critical player in fostering good relationships. I grew up in a southern, black, urban community that was mired in concentrated poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, and joblessness. Prior to gentrification, the neighborhood I lived in was rigidly segregated leading to an environment with higher poverty, fewer resources, poorer schools, and violence that most adults could not phantom yet along a child. My mother dropped out of high school and had three children by the age of 21. She worked her way through nursing school while raising my siblings and I on her own. Not unlike many families in my neighborhood though, I was raised with mainstream values of working hard, getting an education, and treating others with dignity and respect. My background and cultural environment have made me resilient. Resilience lessens the effects of stressful events or adversity (Craig, 2019). I am often told that I keep everyone calm at work, because I am always calm, relaxed, and do not stress. The truth is that I have work-related stress also. Resilience, learned from neighborhood and my mother, has taught me that no task is too difficult to overcome. I believe I respond positively because of this. Reference Craig, H. (2019).
