Unit 2: Database Search

Searching for research articles is not the same as searching google for the nearest restaurants. Searching for articles, if you use the correct words, can be relatively easy, or if you are new to conducting searches for the latest research, it can be time consuming, grueling and frustrating to say the least. I know when I completed my Master’s Degree in Nursing online in the early 1990’s, literature searches through an online library was truly a new concept for me. With the help of my children, who were in middle and high school then, along with a few calls to my school’s librarian, knowing I lived 1200 miles away from the physical school I completed my degree with, I quickly improved in the effectiveness of my searches. Database searching still is a skill I use weekly even now, in my doctorate program.
If you are struggling, I have three options for you. First, I suggest you go to Chamberlain’s library’s website at https://library.chamberlain.edu/libraryhome in the lower middle section there is a section that asks need help? The third tab over is database tutorials. Once you click on it, you have access to a wealth of resources. If you still are struggling after listening to one of the tutorials, feel free to reach out to me so I can help you with this. Database searching will be part of this course, as well as most of your other nursing courses, so we want to make sure you have a good understanding of how to be successful.

Conduct a database search comparing one of the following database directories with Google Scholar.
CINAHL and Google Scholar PubMed and Google Scholar
Explain how you were able to narrow down the number of article hits you had initially, and present within your post a summary of the credible article you chose as your resource. How do you know your article choice is credible? Which database do you prefer and why?
How will using a database search facilitate your
· scholarly work;
· nursing work (evidence-based practice); and
· personal self-development?
