“Symbolism and Character Motivation”
Students have read and discussed the play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell. This essay is to offer a
detailed and thoughtful summary of the events in the play, as it relates to symbolism (of events in the play,
items or objects described in the story, and the actions and dialogues of characters) and character motivation
(students will demonstrate an interpretation of how the character may have felt in specific situations in the
play).
The essay is to include a persuasive element. Students will reflect upon the protagonist and antagonist of the
play, and make a case for which character(s) may be most deserving of the reader’s sympathy.
A simple formula to follow for this essay, as introduced in class: Summary plus symbolism equals a Literary
Analysis. MLA citations are required for any quotations taken from the text.
