(a)  Review the mood, somatoform, and dissociative disorder cases (6, 8, 9, 10) in Brown and Barlow (2017). You will need the casebook, as I do not have any electronic access to any of the cases beyond 1-5.  

(b)  Review the following videos:

  • “Ann: Bipolar Disorder” (located in MyPsychLab, Video Series link).
  • “Feliciano: Living with Bipolar Disorder” (located in MyPsychLab, Video Series link).

(c)  Discuss one of the video cases (Ann or Feliciano).  According to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, explain whether the individual either meets or does not meet full criteria for the diagnosis, based on the symptoms reported in the video.

(d)  Discuss the differential diagnosis. (i.e., several disorders may have overlapping symptoms. Which other diagnoses have similar symptoms, and why would they not be diagnosed in this particular case? Week Three Discussion: Bipolar Disorder.

People of lower socioeconomic status have been linked to have higher rates of Bipolar I disorder. “Bipolar I disorder is more common among women than men, with a ratio of ~3:2 (CDC.org 2015). Bipolar I disorder typically develops in a person’s late teen or early adulthood with an average onset age of 25 years old. Bipolar I disorder is defined as ”manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks” (NIMH.org 2015).
