After reading “2b or Not 2b” by David Crystal, complete the following assignment:
Your goal is to list/identify and explain 3 rhetorical strategies that Crystal uses throughout this piece. So, for
example, you see him comparing and contrasting: you are going to identify the strategy, and tell me A) where
he uses it, B) why he uses it, and C) whether or not it is effective. Your overall response should look something
like what I have below.
Compare and Contrast – Crystal uses this strategy when he compares aliens to zombies. He does this to show
that most monsters, regardless of what they’re called, are pretty much the same. I found it to be very effective
because it helped him drive home his main point that creative writers are unoriginal with the monsters they
create these days.
Cause and Effect – Crystal used this strategy when he showed how Dracula spawned an entire fad of vampire
literature and movies. He does this to show just how many works of creative writing essentially ripped off Bram
Stoker’s original Dracula.
