An Ethical Situation

Imagine this scene: You live here in Florida right now. The Governor has begun to ease the quarantine
restrictions, but masks are still required in all places of business to be worn by the employees and
customers/guests/everyone. You go into Publix to buy some food. The person ahead of you in an aisle is not
wearing a mask and not keeping social distance from you and other people. You say to her, “Pardon me
sir/ma’am, aren’t you supposed to be wearing mask. I’m wearing mine. You are putting me in danger.” He/she
answers, “I don’t give a ‘shxxxxt” about the silly mask requirement. Mind your own business.” You leave the
store, stopping to report the incident to the manager as you leave. You don’t know what or whether anything
more happens with this person or the manager in the store.
Write a short 2-page double-spaced essay about this experience. Describe anything more about the encounter
that you imagine. Now ask yourself, “What is the ethical situation – problem here? How can I evaluate the
situation? What is good, bad, right or wrong here? Why is it good, bad, right or wrong? Where do I get my
ideas of good, bad, right or wrong that I’m applying to this situation? In other words, try to think critically about
your encounter and not just to jump to what seems to be the obvious conclusion. What are your rights? What
are the other person’s rights? What are the manager’s rights? How should the situation be handled ethically? Is
anything wrong about that other shopper’s ethics? What? Why?
