Issue: Whether scholastic athletes afforded ample time to rest and study based on scholarship expectations without using energy enhancing supplements?

Position:  Athletes do not have ample time to rest and study based on practice and scholastic expectations.

Premise 1: Most athletes are required to practice twice daily for a minimum of 2 hours each practice, including weight training.

Premise 2: Athletes must carry a full course load and successfully pass each course in order to qualify for scholarship funding.

Premise 3: In order to maintain grades, a minimum of one hour per class, per day is suggested in order to successfully retain information and pass classes.

Based on scholastic expectations, as well as practice requirements, athletes do not have ample time to rest and study without using energy enhancing supplements in order to assist them with maintaining energy levels to make it through the average day.

Most athletes are required to practice twice daily for a minimum of 2 hours which typically last two hours before classes in the morning and also 2 hour weight training or conditioning for two hours after classes in the evening after the conclusion of classes.  These practices and trainings usually start at 6 a.m. for the morning and 6 p.m. for the evening.  Both of these practices account for at least 6 hours out of each day with travel/prep as well as showering and dressing after the conclusion of practice.

In addition to practice, athletes must carry a full course load and successfully pass each course in order to qualify for scholarship funding.  A minimum of 12 credit hours (equivalent to 4 classes) is typically required to qualify for scholarship, however, to maintain progress towards graduating on time, athletes usually take on 15 credit hours (equivalent to 5 classes).  Based on standards, each credit counts towards an equivalent of required in class hours each week.  This means that the athlete will be in class an average of 3 hours per day.  With travel to and from class, this requires at least a minimum of 4 hours per day.

In order to maintain grades, a minimum of one hour per class, per day is suggested in order to successfully retain information and pass classes.  Experts suggest that in order to successfully retain information and pass classes that students should dedicate at least 1 hour per class per night to studying.  If a student is taking a full course load of 5 classes this requires a total of 5 hours of study per evening.

With a total of 13 hours per day dedicated to practice requirements, classes and studying, this does not account for time spent eating, preparing for class, traveling and resting.  When all of these items are taken into consideration, athletic scholars do not have enough time to make it through the average day without using energy enhancing supplements.
