Challenging the Secret Government

[ad_1]

During the Cold War, the United States government invested heavily in its intelligence agencies like the CIA and the FBI to combat communist influence both at home and abroad. Much of this was done in secret. The American public and even members of Congress had little knowledge of what some of these agencies actually did. When the Watergate scandal broke out in the early 1970s, demonstrating how the Executive branch could use its intelligence agencies to cover up crimes, some started to wonder if American intelligence agencies had been used against Americans. Journalists and Congressmen wanted to know exactly what the CIA and the FBI were doing. In her work, Challenging the Secret Government, Kathryn Olmstead traces the investigations into American intelligence agencies. In this assignment, write a 3-4 page review of of her work. It must answer the following questions:

What role did journalists play in revealing the secrets of the CIA and the FBI? Why were journalists so eager to uncover the truth of these agencies and how did the American public respond?
How did Congress investigate the CIA and the FBI? What operations or programs did these investigations reveal? What made these operations or programs so troubling to Congress, the press, or the American public?
Was Congress able to reel in the power of the CIA and the FBI through their investigations? What obstacles did Congress face trying to manage the intelligence agencies?
