Things You Might Consider When Writing Your Response:
Are there rhymes or not? What is the rhythm like? Can you tell us a little about the genre or artist to start out
(always assume your reader knows absolutely nothing about what you’re discussing). What purpose does the
rhyme or rhythm serve? How does the title relate to the lyrics? What big themes are present in the song? What
is it about? Are there any metaphors? What do they mean? Any hidden meanings you can find in the song?
What kind of language does the song use and who is the song’s intended audience based on the diction
(words used)? What lines or verses are the most important to the story or the feeling conveyed in the song and
why? Write a descriptive response paper on the words to the song as a piece of writing without music. Can they stand alone? Are they as successful in print as they are when performed with music? Focus on the lyrics here. Sometimes students get too caught up in giving the reader the history of the artist, but that’s not necessary – just a sentence or two to provide context is plenty.
