Practical problems in a workplace or a college campus.

[ad_1]

Begin by listing problems you’d like to investigate. Focus on practical problems in a workplace or a college
campus. Make sure that the problem is solvable, though, and that you have access to the research you’ll need.
A great place to start is considering equipment or new technology / a new policy that will increase efficiency,
safety, morale or decrease costs, customer complaints.
Below is the process two students followed to choose well-focused, appropriate topics:
A second-semester RCC student was aware that college students need laptops but often cannot afford them
and/or are uncertain about the best type to purchase. Her research question began as what resources can help
college students afford and choose a laptop? By talking with other students, she learned that many colleges
and universities offer laptop purchase programs to help with selection of and payment for computers. As she
researched ProQuest Central, she learned that research shows increased learning, in some cases, for
A fourth-semester nursing student was employed as a CNA and knew that shortage of staff was a serious
problem in his workplace. However, this problem was much too big for him to solve and was not an appropriate
topic. Therefore, he thought about a symptom of this shortage: low patient satisfaction; reduced staffing often
results in reduced quality of care and lower patient satisfaction ratings. His revised topic, then, was improving
patient satisfaction. His initial research question was how can we improve patient satisfaction in our hospital?
As he began reading the secondary research articles, he saw a way to focus even further. The research he
found showed that patients become dissatisfied for various reasons: response times, excessive noise, poor
staff communication, etc. He also located research that discussed specific suggestions for reducing excessive
noise; since he knew the project required recommending a solution, he chose to focus on reducing noise in the
local hospital.
Be sure to create a reasonable real-world context. Take a look at the following common scenarios from the
business world:
Our company uses Technology X to perform Task A. Should we instead be using Technology Y to perform Task
A? For instance, our company uses traditional surveying tools in its contracting business. Should we be using
GPS surveying tools instead?
Our company has decided to purchase a tool to perform Task A. Which make and model of the tool should we
purchase, and from which supplier should we buy it? For instance, our company has decided to purchase 10
multimedia computers. Which brand and model should we buy, and from whom should we buy them? Is
leasing the tool a better option than purchasing?
Our company does not currently perform Function X. Is it feasible to perform Function X? For instance, we do
not currently offer day care for our employees. Should we? What are the advantages and disadvantages of
doing so? What forms can day care take? How is it paid for?
Following are additional ideas for topics:
the value of using social media to form ties with students in a technical-communication class on another
campus
the need for expanded opportunities for internships or service-learning in your major
the need to create an advisory board of industry professionals to provide expertise about your major
the need to raise money to keep the college’s computer labs up to date
the advisability of starting a campus branch of a professional organization in your field 

the need to create or improve organizations for minorities or women on campus
One serious pitfall to this assignment is not doing enough preliminary research. As the above examples
illustrate, the research informs your topic selection. Students who skip this step face much more work (and
mid-semester panic) in the days before the final project deadline.
Explain your topic and sources:
For this assignment, you need to explain your topic and discuss a minimum of two credible sources. Since I
want to be certain your topic can result in a successful project, I need the following details:
Focus of your recommendation
Write one paragraph of 5-7 sentences that explain your topic, why you chose it, and your learning goal (what
you hope to discover).
Example: My project will recommend ways to improve/prevent/reduce …, My project will recommend whether
we should do … or ….
Source #1 to justify the problem
Write one paragraph of 5-7 sentences explaining the source you chose to justify that the problem exists. This
source will most likely be a .gov, .org, or .edu website, but it may also be a journal article. Discuss its credibility
(author, publisher, date of publication, relevance to topic) and the specific details that justify the problem.
Example: A source written by OSHA, published on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, on 2009, justifies the
problem of severe injuries that occur in welding. The OSHA organization identifies welding a “hazardous
activity” and mentions “welders flash and UV radiation burns” as the most common welding injuries. The
statistics for 2009 were …
Source #2 to suggest a possible solution
Write one paragraph of 5-7 sentences explaining the source you found that suggests a possible solution to the
problem. This source may be an article published in a professional or trade journal. You will find these articles
by searching the ProQuest Central or other databases through our library and the Web. Professional
organization (.org), government (.gov), and education (.edu) websites are often useful here). Discuss its
credibility and the specific solution it suggests for the problem.
Example: An article written by Thomas Jones and Ralph Smith titled “Improving Safety for Welders” published
in Injury Prevention journal on 12/13/13 suggests several ways to prevent typical welding injuries. Jones and
Smith state that the majority of eye injuries can be prevented with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE). The article also points out that PPE alone is not enough. Employers need a PPE Program to ensure
that employees have, use, and are properly fitted for the equipment. A second
source I found is a website published by The American Welding Society (AWS), dated 2012. It lists
specifications for welding helmets, filters, face shields, and safety glasses. This website also lists the
requirements for Welding PPE to meet safety standards according to the American National Standards Institute
