Directions:

Read Chapter 16 (Argument)  in College Writing Skills with Readings, 10th edition.  Also read College Lectures: Is Anybody Listening by David Daniels 711 and Single-Sex Schools: An Old Idea Whose Time Has Come by Diane Urbina 715.  Then construct an argument of your own for or against (not both!) an educational practice, philosophy, technology, or curriculum.  For example, you might consider arguing for or against school uniforms for K-12 or arguing for or against non-credit review courses for entering college students.  Almost anything connected with education can be arguable!  (But avoid such topics as parking problems at a local campus or GPA requirements too specific and too broad respectively).

In constructing your argument, use the I-dislike/I-like because” formula you learned at the beginning of the semester.  Your thesis should contain your claim and the reasons for it.  Your thesis needs to be the last sentence in your first paragraph.  However, instead of I-like or I-dislike, use words like must, should, ought, must not, should not, and ought not.

For a good model/sample essay, see Teenagers and Jobs in Chapter 16.
